We’re so excited to share that our newly refurbished kitchen at AutismAble South Shields is now officially open – and we’re already loving the difference it’s making!

This renovation has completely transformed the space. What was once a smaller kitchen alongside a separate sensory room has now been opened up into one larger, welcoming environment that works better for everyone. The result is a space that feels more inclusive, accessible, and ready to support our members in new and meaningful ways.

With the help of our brilliant joiner, Merrick, the wall was knocked through to create a much more open layout. The new kitchen has been thoughtfully designed with accessibility and independence in mind, featuring wheelchair-friendly benches and sink areas, accessible cupboards, and a brand-new cooker complete with a bespoke splashback.

One of our group’s favourite additions has been the large fridge with a water and ice dispenser – which has already proven to be a big hit and is helping encourage everyone to stay hydrated throughout the day!

This week, our members took part in their very first cooking session in the new kitchen, and it’s safe to say it was a huge success. Seeing everyone enjoying the space, building confidence, and developing new skills has been incredibly rewarding.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to The Social Investment Business for funding this project through the Better Youth Spaces Grant. Their support has helped us create a kitchen that is not only more functional, but truly inclusive for the people we support.

A special thank you also to Adams Bespoke, who brought the project to life and went above and beyond to make the space extra special for our members.

We can’t wait to see all the cooking, learning, and independence-building that will happen in this space in the months and years ahead.
