Learning at AutismAble is not just about the classroom; we actively seek ways to support our members to participate fully in society. Our recent residential trip to The Sill at Hadrian’s Wall is a perfect example of this. Thanks to a kind invitation from the Youth Hostel Association, a group of us spent two unforgettable nights at this beautiful spot, making memories that will certainly last a lifetime.

A Warm Welcome at The Sill

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this would be no ordinary trip. The Sill welcomed us with open arms, providing not just a place to stay but a true home away from home. The accommodation was comfortable, the staff were incredibly welcoming, and the food—well, let’s just say the full English breakfast became an instant hit with everyone!

Exploring Vindolanda and Making Memories

Our two days were packed full of fun, exploration, and plenty of laughter. We visited Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, where we walked among ancient ruins and enjoyed the beautiful Northumberland scenery.

Evening Fun: Games and Karaoke

Evenings were filled with a mix of games, karaoke, and bonding. Whether it was watching a film, hanging out around the pool table, or enjoying a round of board games, the fun never stopped. And when it came to karaoke, everyone gave it their all! It was a lovely experience, seeing everyone support one another and cheer each other on.

Building Confidence and Friendships

But it wasn’t just about the activities. The trip was a chance for our group members to strengthen their friendships – and create new ones – and build confidence and independence. Every moment was about spending quality time together. As a key part of our SociAble Pathway, these trips allow our group members to step outside their comfort zones, create lifelong memories, and unlock new experiences together.

What Our Members Had to Say

Lexie said it best: “Every second was just wonderful. I can’t say enough how grateful I am—it was one of the best experiences of my life.” For Justin, the trip was a mix of fun and food: “I loved the night-time entertainment and breakfast with bacon, eggs, sausages, and beans!” For others, like Nathan and Kian, it was all about spending time with friends, playing games, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Our parents were equally delighted with the experience, sharing messages of thanks and telling us how much their group members had talked non-stop about the trip. As Kian’s family said, “He hasn’t laughed so much in ages.”

Thank You to The Sill

At the end of the trip, there was one common question from everyone: When’s the next one?

At AutismAble, we aim to provide experiences that enable, empower and enrich our members, and this residential trip to The Sill certainly ticked all those boxes. We’re already counting down to our next adventure, and we can’t wait to make even more memories together!

A huge thank you to The Sill and the Youth Hostel Association for their amazing hospitality and for making our stay so special. We hope to visit you again soon!
