Justin’s Story
This story is written by Rachel, a member of the AutismAble team, reflecting on her experience supporting Justin 1:1.
Justin joined AutismAble in 2018. He has ADHD, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and a Learning Difficulty (LD). When he first joined, Justin found it hard to be around other people. He had trouble communicating his needs, which sometimes led to frustration and outbursts. To support him, AutismAble gave him a safe, quiet space and 1:1 support so he could feel comfortable.
At the beginning, Justin spent most of his time on his laptop and did not take part in group activities. The sensory room was his safe space where he could be alone when things felt overwhelming. He rarely spoke with other members and could not stay in the same room as them for long.
We worked with Justin slowly, helping him take small steps towards joining group activities. Our approach included:
- 1:1 support during sessions • Gradually encouraging him to spend time with others
- Teaching social skills like taking turns and sharing
- Using activities that matched his interests to encourage conversation
- By moving at his pace and celebrating every achievement, Justin began to feel more confident with staff and peers.
Justin has made great progress – he now joins all group sessions and activities and the sensory room, once a private space, is now shared with others. Justin has learned to take turns and share.
He has also developed a close friendship with Saihan. When he sees Saihan, he says, “Saihan, you’re my good friend,” which is a huge step from where he started.
Saihan has been very kind and supportive. He talks to Justin about his interests and shares his crisps with him. This friendship has helped Justin feel more confident and happy. It shows how much a caring peer can help someone feel included and connected. From spending time alone to making a close friend, Justin has come a long way. His friendship with Saihan is a great example of how meaningful connections can change lives.
