Mark joined AutismAble in August 2024, transitioning over from another service. I was given the great privilege of being Mark’s 1:1 support when he joined us full time. At first, Mark was still finding his feet in a new environment, taking his time to settle in. We spent a lot of time together building an amazing bond, and I quickly learned his likes and dislikes.

In the early days, we spent a lot of time in the sensory area, as Mark could become easily overwhelmed or distracted in his new environment. We also spent a lot of time reading, and I quickly discovered Mark’s love of books – particularly We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Although Mark didn’t communicate much with staff or peers at first, I was amazed when I started to read this book and he suddenly began to recite the story in full. I stopped reading, and Mark knew every word, telling the entire story to me. It was such a special moment that I will always treasure.

We decided to do a Bear Hunt story with a few other members, performed to a full room of staff and members. When Mark began to tell the story with such expression and excitement in front of everyone, it was magical. Watching the surprise and joy on the faces of the staff team was incredible… they were in awe of Mark. This was the first time many people saw just how much he was capable of, and it marked the start of Mark’s amazing journey and growth.

Since then, Mark has blossomed in confidence and is a pure joy. He loves to sing and dance, and even performed a karaoke duet with Libby (Mark as Troy and Libby as Gabriella) – singing High School Musical together. Music is a massive love of Mark’s, and Yellow Submarine is a particular favourite that he enjoys singing solo to staff and members.

We also go every Friday to the AutismAble allotment plot, which Mark absolutely loves. He enjoys filling the water barrels, watering the plants, and taking the wheelbarrows back and forth. Our neighbours at Age Concern are very fond of Mark, and he loves to sit on their deckchair and have a natter with them. He is a much-loved character and has grown into a confident, happy and enthusiastic member of the team.
